I tweeted to a SimGuru about a week ago and asked the following question:

"Will a non-playable Sim (that is created already), be able to find that special someone, so that he or she could develop a relationship or date? Not that he or she is possibly doomed for single life if our playable sim doesn't look in their direction?"

They responded with something along the lines of unfortunately this won't happen... :(( Poor Sim people that we don't give a chance to... The hope I have is that there are more couples (in a realistic sense) than single people. Have it equally balanced, you know?

EDIT: Not unplayable but those that we don't control at the interim time...

I think that would be pretty awesome. Like, let's say you have Male Sim and Female Sim and they get together and get married. And Male Sim goes off to work one day and BOOM. This Female Coworker Sim hits on him at work and calls him up in the middle of the night while Male and Female Sims are sleeping (together). And next thing you know, Female Coworker Sim is now Homewrecker Sim... and Female Sim becomes Newly Divorced & Single Female Sim, haha. Sounds like a blast, actually. And a tragedy. But still a blast.

Wouldn't that require story progression in the Sims 4 which it currently doesn't have though? I mean, I personally love the idea of non-active household sims falling in love, settling down and having kids too (or having an affair here and there to spice up the neighborhood and provide rumours and all that), but I don't think it'll happen unless they implement story progression.

Sims 3 has story progression and my goodness, it was either a blessing or a curse at times depending on how the story progressed lol.

It is sad with no story progression.

Given that they've done away with story progression, the only relationship changes will be the ones you actively make, if I understand it correctly. Would have been nice to have some kind of progression take place, without you having to be a puppet master of every single action towards something like that, but I suppose they have their reasons to not have it. DLC maybe? :p

Not at all, I hardly ever find it complex being a god. In fact, quite the opposite!

It's not that. It's just when I play I hate being a 'god' or tyrant for that matter it's just without story progression you kinda are forced to be a dictator.

At least the inactive Sims will grow with age, so story progression is not completely gone! (at least that was what my understanding was!)

The guru's comments I've seen on the subject explain that they didn't put anything in the game that would make life changing differences for a non-played sim. That way you won't have sims hitting on your married sims unless you want them to or someone you have marked for your sim won't end up marrying someone else suddenly. The scenario that @FieryPhoenix described can definitely happen but you have to orchestrate it yourself.

I've seen quite a few people who are thrilled with this change since it keeps weird relationships from happening or Story Progression from sabotaging the plans they might have. Personally, I would have preferred optional story progression so I can turn it on and off when I want.

I will miss Story Progression, but I'd love it to be optional. I play one family at a time anyways. Either way, I'll enjoy the game.

Hopefully they can add it in a future expansion pack. I love the people around me getting jobs, marrying, and stuff without me, its like real life...life happening for everyone else as I carry on.

I'm the same way. I hardly every played more than 1 to 3 sims at a time. But, I think I'm going to give it a try with TS4. Maybe have at least one game where I play a bunch of different households. Might have to turn aging off for awhile on that one, LOL. I am definitely planning on replacing towns with my own sims (or downloaded ones) for one game I play so I can set up a variety of my own preset townies.

To be honest though, I'm not sure I'm going to miss it too much, as long as everyone ages properly. I don't remember paying a huge amount of attention to what other families were doing and I was frequently frustrated at trying to find a suitable mate for my sim when everyone he ran into was already in a relationship or married. I might end up preferring no story progression.
