I’m super excited about The Sims 4! I’m especially ecstatic about the new emotions system & smarter Sims. I’m totally on board with more unique and complex Sims. In that vein, I’d really like to see enhancements to the free will system. I want more depth and variety – I want my Sims to make more interesting choices. I’d really like to see the following:
1. Get them out of the box!
Sims with high free will should be able to autonomously choose to leave their home or current lot. I would love to be playing say my teen daughter Sim, click over to her dad, who I left grilling hamburgers, and find him jogging along a foot path, or over at a friend’s house playing table tennis, or at a movie.
2. Along the same line, I’d like to see my
Sims invite people over to their own homes and form groups autonomously. I’d love to then click over on my mom Sim and find her soaking in the hot tub, drinking nectar and telling stories with her bff.
3. Sims that work toward their goals.
I’d really like to see my Sims show an awareness of their goals/aspirations and to make choices driven by them. If my Sim has a goal to improve his cooking skill, for instance, I would love to find him reading a book about cooking. Or if he wants to write a book, he could sit down at the computer and start one. Or if she wants to get promoted, maybe I could find her at her boss’s house, sucking up to the man. This could work well with the “focused†mood.
4.
A higher free will setting that allows Sims to truly assert their wills in ways that can shape their lives and impact the lives of those around them. I’m talking about making the big life decisions --- quitting a job, applying for a new one, applying for college, asking someone on a date, proposing marriage, breaking up, trying for babies, adopting a child or pet, buying property, starting a business... These are big decisions and might require the player’s approval via pop-up boxes, but I think it would be really cool if my Sims could really push me for what they wanted. I don’t want these to be random decisions. I want them to make sense in context, to be driven by personality, ambition, emotional state, experience, and relationship awareness. For example:
*Martin and his wife Alexis go to a party together. They are a happy, compatible couple with a good relationship. They have been talking about having a baby together. Martin is flirty but also family-oriented. At the party, Martin runs into his old girlfriend Betty. Betty is looking super hot in her red party dress. In a romantic mood, she flirts with Martin & he accepts her flirt. Alexis sees from across the party. She’s a sensitive Sim & starts to cry and leaves the party. Martin now feels guilty. He rejects Betty’s next flirt and follows Alexis home. He apologizes to her, asks for forgiveness, gives her flowers maybe. Alexis forgives him and they share a make-up kiss. They continue to flirt and a few minutes later, I receive a pop-up asking: Try for a baby?
*OR: Lena and her husband Tad go to a party together. They aren’t the healthiest couple. They’ve been arguing a lot lately. Tad is flirty and has commitment issues, and Lena is a jealous and hot-tempered Sim. At the party, Tad spots his old girlfriend, Betty, nursing a mixed drink at the bar. Betty is feeling vulnerable after being rejected by some guy, but she’s looking super hot in her red party dress ? Tad goes up to her and they start flirting. Lena walks in the room, sees what’s going on, and gets mad. She confronts Betty and calls her a mean name. Betty gets embarrassed and leaves. Lena turns to Tad and they start arguing. She slaps him across the face. A box pops up asking me: Break-up with Tad? I choose yes. Another box pops up asking: Kick Tad out? I choose yes, kick the bum out. The household splits, I choose to play Lena. She goes home from the party alone. Lena’s a family-oriented Sim, so the break-up hits her hard. She’s depressed now. She won’t get out of bed for the car pool to her waitressing job unless I make her. Lena also happens to love books and has the primary aspiration of becoming a writer. She rolls a want to quit her job and write a novel, and I turn it into a goal (not sure how the goal system works, so assuming I can do that). The next morning she wakes up, pulls out her phone, and a box appears asking: Quit your job? I choose yes again, and later that morning, Lena sits down at her computer and begins to write a drama novel.
I know not everybody would be interested in this, which is why this would only happen on the highest free will setting. But I think it would be really fun and interesting if my Sims could push their wills on my own when it comes to the big, life-changing decisions, with some sort of intelligent process behind their choices. I really want them to be able to assert their individuality and desires.
